There is a lot of blogs, forums and place to get information about various aspects of our hobby. This post is going to be about my learning and stepping in DMR. As with most of my posts, this is aimed at someone just looking at and thinking about diving into DMR. If you are a seasoned DMR operator, then you likely know all this already. He uses it a lot when he travels around a two state are for his job and loves it. After that, I decided to order the same radio and see what DMR was all about.

This friend sent me his code plug and when I looked at it I was lost. He had all the repeaters for two states, lots of talk groups and lots of operator call signs. I decided to take a step back and learn some more about how DMR works and how to do the programming. I wanted to start simple and begin my code plug from scratch. The closest DMR repeater to my house is about 20 miles away and with all the hills around Arkansas, I cannot hear it with the HT antenna.

The completed Pi, DVMega combination put together and ready to go. Yes there are two screws missing. One could download Raspian and install all the software separately but there is an image already created that is very popular called Pi-Star. Pi-Star can be downloaded from here.

After inserting the card into the Pi and booting it up, there are two very important steps. The first is to expand the image to use the entire card.

When first written, a small portion of the space is used and a command needs to be run to expand the file system to use the rest of the space. That command is pistar-expand. The second important thing to do is to make sure the image is updated.

The Pi-Star creators provide two commands for doing that. There is a lot of information on this site in addition to this page related to DMR. After configuring the hotspot, I was able to verify that it connected to the BrandMeister Network.

I had to choose a simplex 70cm frequency. After consulting the band plans and looking at the Arkansas repeater council page, I was able to choose one to use.

I listen to the Hamradio Workbench podcast and they use a talk group that I programmed into a channel and was able to hear some of that traffic. I also made a call and confirmed that I was able to transmit on the talk group as well as receive. My next step is to find other talk groups that I might want to listen to, and determine how I will use DMR going forward.

I am planning on taking the hotspot on business trips and possibly use it in the car for DMR mobile. Overall the process was not difficult, but took some time researching how DMR worked so I could understand the programming better.

I used many web resources along with several YouTube videos. I still have a few more bookmarked to watch but I am getting a handle on it. Thanks for the info on this I am about to pull the trigger on DMR and will be looking at this quite a bit as i have a pi just collecting dust!!

Thanks for the article. Nice resource to learn about the digital com stuff… Just starting out and this will be a very helpful starting point with references. Regards, Greg. E-Mail will not be published required. We never share your e-mail address.

Napoli: mertens 122/o gol, è capocannoniere all-time

This evening, the BrandMeister dashboard shows industrial repeaters commercial equipmenthomebrew repeaters and over hotspots of various types. Because of its popularity, the openSPOT is on backorder price: This HamRadioConcepts video walks through the setup and basic operation.

I thought the openSPOT would be a good widget to have around the shack. Also, it is very turnkey…no assembly required…but some configuration to work out. Its user interface is a web page that you access via your local network…nicely done.

I got it working in less than one hour and have been fiddling around with it ever since. Hotspots are a funny item. They have very limited RF range, so their main purpose is to provide local RF access into the network just like your Wi-Fi hotspot. One role they play is to provide fill-in coverage when no repeater is available.

Another role they fill is being a personal device that can be connected to your favorite reflector or talk group. You just change the configuration of the modem and it starts speaking the selected modulation. I picked up an MD and while its not quite as nice as my Motorola, I really do like the radio. Note that there are other low cost DMR radios that have serious technical issues. There will be other radios on the market…the technology will keep improving and improved models will hit the market.

I see some very strong technology and market trends in play here that are going to impact the ham radio world. Second, we are seeing multiple radio vendors offering competitive, low cost transceivers. Third, there is high quality commercial repeater gear available from land mobile providers such as Motorola and Hytera.

This is classic ham radio adaptation and innovation that leverages commercial gear for ham radio use.

Another radio that may be of interest to hams is the CS Connect Systems is aiming these radios at the ham market, so there are lots of features you can program.A hotspot, simply put, is your internet gateway to a particular DMR network. Depending on what firmware you are running, what digital modem board you are using etc… there are going to be variations. This is a very common hotspot configuration and one that really sets the base for understanding how they work.

The video is around 20 minutes long and it is very much worth watching. This should be enough info to get you up and running, without too many hiccups. Do NOT add a 0 or 1 on the end like some might suggest. This is only relevant if you have multiple hotspots running at the same time.

This is rare. Be mindful of what Talk Group you are using and how many repeaters it is keying up on the network. This is especially important if you are rag chewing with a friend who is also on a hotspot. It might be best to choose a TAC channel for that. Remember that hotspots are generally reliant upon good WiFi. So if you are using a cell phone for your WiFi source and driving around in a vehicle, you are likely going to have more complaints from those that you are talking to about the reliability of your transmissions.

Cell phone networks can be spotty and have latency here and there, which will cause you more R2D2 issues. Both on transmit and receive. You might need to adjust it higher or lower to get your BER down around 0.

This is VERY important to achieve reliable usage of your hotspot. Radio frequency accuracy varies, so be sure that your hotspot and radio are working well together. Search for:.

The Wi-Fi data-sharing feature is built into most Android devices. If you aren't restricted from using the Wi-Fi hotspot feature on your Android device, enable it. Be selective when using a smartphone as a Wi-Fi hotspot, and with whom you share the password. Data processed through this Wi-Fi feature uses your monthly allotment of mobile data usage.

From the Home screen, press the Menu button, then tap Settings. Turn on the Mobile Hotspot toggle switch. The phone becomes a wireless access point and displays a message in the notification bar when it's activated. To find the password and instructions for the hotspot, tap Mobile Hotspot. Use this password to connect your other devices to the hotspot. If you aren't restricted from using the Wi-Fi hotspot feature on your Android device, enable it:. Optionally, change the hotspot name, password, and other advanced settings such as automatic shutoff and the AP Band.

When the hotspot is activated, connect your other devices to it as if it were any other Wi-Fi router:. From each device with which you want to share Internet access, find the Wi-Fi hotspot. Your computer, tablet, or other smartphones may notify you that new wireless networks are available.

Then, follow the general Wi-Fi connection instructions for most computers.

However, you may not get internet access on your laptop or tablet after you connect because some wireless carriers restrict Wi-Fi Hotspot access only to those who pay for the feature. This makes it possible to access the hotspot feature directly and without adding extra charges from your wireless provider.

Although these apps circumvent carrier restrictions, in most cases bypassing carrier limitations constitutes a terms-of-service violation in your contract. Use these apps at your discretion. When using the Wi-Fi hotspot on your Android phone and other devices, follow these recommendations:. What Does Wireless Really Mean?

Turn on the Wi-Fi hotspot toggle switch. Establish the connection by entering the password for the Wi-Fi hotspot. Leaving the feature activated drains the cell phone battery. If you use a hotspot in a public place or are concerned about hackers intercepting your data, change the password before broadcasting your signal. Different devices and carriers use different methods to activate the mobile hotspot feature.

Some carriers require the use of a stand-alone app, instead of the stock Android capability, to share your data plan with Wi-Fi users. Check the specific instructions for your device manufacturer or your service provider.

More from Lifewire. If you keep practising in this way, then you'll eventually find yourself passively improving at monitoring both elements of the game. It's a painful learning process, but a necessary one and you will get better if you persevere.

To make things a little easier on yourself, it's important to go into each game with something called a build order in mind. The following section contains a little more information on this point, as well as a beginner's example for each race. Build orders are quite simply your pre-determined production plans for the earliest stages of the game - what you're going to build and when you're going to build it.

This ensures you have a goal to work towards, and helps you work efficiently towards achieving it. There are more build order options out there than we could possibly summarise in any one guide such as this, but we wanted to highlight a solid starting list for each race that you can use to get going with. In each video you'll find a versatile build order that should serve you well in all of your early match-ups.

This is one area where you can take a little time to play against the AI, getting the flow of your hotkey and control groups together (see further on in this guide), while starting the process of building a super-efficient and robust economy. Again, just don't get addicted to stomping easy AI opponents in this way, and get back into real multiplayer at your earliest opportunity. If you commit your chosen build to memory, you will find yourself at a huge advantage in the early stages of the ladder climb.

Having a solid plan in place will also free you up to focus on honing your other skills in the early days. If you do not make use of hotkeys, you are always going to be at a permanent disadvantage to anyone who does - even if (all things being equal) they're an inferior player to you. It takes time to move between multiple UI elements, after all, moving your mouse and then clicking. How much better it would be if you could simply tap a button and head straight to your unit or structure of choice.

Fortunately, StarCraft 2 provides an extremely flexible system for assigning hotkeys on the fly, and you are strongly encouraged to do so right from the very beginning of your time with the game. That way you minimise any bad habits you might pick up, and reduce the amount of time between the decisions you make and the actions you take. If you examine the StarCraft 2 interface then you'll notice that every unit and structure has a hotkey assigned to it.

You should commit every one of these to memory, and then get into the habit of using them - no mouse.

Living environment virtual labs

This will help you spend your resources efficiently, without wasting any time either looking down at the keyboard or introducing unnecessary and time-consuming mouse movements to the production process.

Although not as precise or useful, you can also assign location-based hotkeys using the F5-8 keys. Just hold down Control when you're at a location you want to remember and hit one of the available F keys.

This way you'll be able to tap on the key whenever you're somewhere else, and come whizzing back into view. Control Groups are another vital element of playing StarCraft 2 competitively. Entire guides could be written on the subject, but for the purposes of our beginner's guide we're going to give you a basic overview. We'll expand on this section if the guide proves popular. Put simply, Control Groups allow you to assign units and structures - individually or as groups - to the 0-9 keys, which in turn allows you to very quickly jump to whatever area of the game you need to oversee immediately. To install your first Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build1, simply follow these steps.

LEARN MOREBefore installing an Insider Preview build, we recommend backing up your phone. For more information about backing up your mobile device, see Windows 10 Mobile help. From the device, open the Store application, search for and install the Windows Insider application, launch the application and follow the on-screen prompts.

Enter your registered Microsoft Account or corporate account, Select the desired flight Ring, reboot the device and check for updates.

For current Windows 10 Mobile builds, Windows Insider setup options have been migrated into Settings. Select your desired Insider level (Fast, Slow, Release Preview).

Insiders in the fast Ring will get earlier and more frequent access to new features but may experience more bugs. If Phone Update says your device is up to date, you have the latest build. The feedback you provide on Insider Preview builds goes directly to our engineers to help develop Windows. To provide feedback, simply visit the Feedback Hub app in your Start menu. The Feedback Hub also connects you to Insider news, quests, community, and other resources.

Find out how to provide constructive feedback. Changing rings is a simple process. Under Choose Your Level, select between the following rings: Fast, Slow or Release Preview. Find out more about rings. Below is a set of quick references for key information you may find useful as you participate in the program. This information will also be helpful when submitting feedback for build issues or feature suggestions, as well as reaching out for assistance.

If your mobile device has any pending update waiting to be installed, it will not check for further updates until the current update has been installed. Install any pending updates and then re-check for additional updates that may be available.

If you have set Active Hours, ensure your device is left turned on during the off-hours so the install process can complete. You may manually initiate the install of a pending build at any time. Validate your device is up-to-date. Builds are more frequently released to the Fast Ring than to Slow or Release Preview Rings. As such, the Fast Ring is often on a newer build than other rings. There may be an issue with a build that could lead to issues with updates being received. Some phones, regions, and mobile operators might not support Insider Preview.

If your phone isn't listed below, and no Insider Preview builds appear under Enroll in the Windows Insider app, then your phone isn't supported and it may or may not be supported in the future. If you are in a situation where you are unable to use your device as expected, we want you to know how to recover your device to a good state.

There may be a workaround available. See instructions at Windows Phone Device Recovery.

Prior to doing any reinstall or rollback, ensure you have backed up important files. If you need to return to your original operating system version, use the Windows Device Recovery Tool.

While participating in the Windows Insider Preview program, you may find it necessary to stop taking new builds on a particular mobile device. Below you will find the steps to complete this process. We recommend that you do stop getting builds when your device is on a Production Build so that you do not need to recover your device.

Production builds are stable, receive servicing updates, will allow you to stay up-to-date and you will not lose any of the data on your device. If you unenroll while your device is running an Insider build, your device will remain on a build that will not receive future servicing updates, will have an expiry date set, and may contain security vulnerabilities. To find out the current Production Build number, check the Windows Insider Blog. For example, in the FIFA app on the iPad, they show a review request after you win a Championship League.
